Technology is mandatory for any internet marketing company, however, often people just starting out don’t have a good knowledge of the technologies needed or how it will impact their small business.
These ten tips should help you get off to a good start. Try to create processes and systems that integrate seamlessly, and are accessible 100% of the time to take care of patrons and prospects.
Build a computerized system if you want to make your work simple and your bottom line strong.
1. Computer & Peripherals
If you’re going to do internet marketing, you’ll need a computer - hopefully one that you own, either a standard model or a laptop. Obtain one with a lot of memory and processing speed. A broadband internet connection is preferred over dial-up. You’ll also want a printer. Get wireless capabilities for both.
2. Your Personal Domain
Be sure to get a domain name that belongs to you, so that you can set off~start} to develop your own brand. Further, some providers won’t permit you to refer to affiliate links, or even subdomains, but only a website name that you personally own. A first-rate website name will be short (30 characters or less), meaningful to the eye and the ear, and directly related of your business or product. The most favored names end in “.com” and such names are favorite for many online marketing small businesses, when available.
3. Telecommunications
Another important tool is connectivity, including an Internet Service Provider and a phone - either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset. It should have both local and long distance features, and if you plan to hold meetings for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do workshops, etc., you’ll most likely want to acquire a teleconferencing service that can process many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, calls simultaneously.
4. Web Hosting
You’ll have to have a web host to provide a “home” for your website. There are many web hosting companies available to help small businesses and internet marketers. Their capabilities do vary somewhat, as do their costs, so make sure to shop around before deciding.
5. Data & Systems Precautions
You’ll also require robust safety measures for your systems and information. This can take the form of physical security, plus programs such as firewalls, and security applications like McAfee or Norton.
6. Applications & Data Backup & Restore Systems
Another necessary, but frequently overlooked, need is for backup of your locally resident programs and info. Despite other security measures, there will probably come a time when you suffer a system crash, with either some or total loss of info and critical programs. Consequently you will also need a rigorous backup and restore capability.
7. Products
You’ll need one or more products to sell - products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by one or more third parties. If you offer your custom created products, then you’ll also have to worry about all the associated back office capabilities. If you get your products from others, then you’ll have to worry about supply relationship management, order fulfillments, customer satisfaction and proper payment.
8. Affiliate Network
If you’re intending to offer multiple affiliate products, you’ll probably also want to participate with one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.
9. Web 2.0 Features
The Net is very dynamic, so if you want to be successful in today’s online world, you’ll want websites and services that support blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to support a whole host of collaboration, using the web as the network platform).
10. Technical Support
Lastly - again a frequently overlooked necessity - is the need for outstanding technical support - for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.
If these go down and you are unable to get prompt technical support from any/all your suppliers, the resulting downtime can influence your advertising campaigns, you can lose or annoy potential purchasers, and ultimately, your income will suffer (including your reputation, as well).
Technology is the lifeblood of an affiliate business, and given Murphy’s Law, you have to to plan for the ultimate downtime and system crashes that occur as well. Implementing all these necessary technologies will ensure the success of your internet business.
